TEACHING/CHOREOGRAPHY RESUME

The foundation of my choreography and teaching philosophy is storytelling. Using dance to express character, emotion, or concepts all stems from a strong foundation in acting. Once graduating into the professional audition pool, students will discover that there are a large number of strong, technical dancers, but not everyone can both act and dance simultaneously. My job as a theatre dance teacher and choreographer is to teach how dance is used as an extension of our intentions as a character. It is important to make acting choices as a dancer, even when the choreographer has not given you specific direction. This is what makes someone stand out in an audition situation. Dance is an elevated expression of emotion, stakes, and intention so it needs to be an important part of the training.

Since I began teaching, I have always looked at each student individually, finding what they specifically need to reach their potential, and inspire them to reach their goals. Each person responds differently to feedback and faces hurdles as they learn and grow. When I teach a new group of students, I aim to get to know what they will respond to best, to bring out the best version of themselves and allow them to grow as an artist. To accomplish this, I create an atmosphere where not only are hard work, accountability, and team building are a priority; but so is instilling a love for creativity and expression. I believe theatre and dance is a space for everyone, regardless of background therefore, it is so important that all Musical Theatre Majors leave school with a strong foundation of dance technique.

A main reason I am passionate about the performing arts is because I love watching great storytellers. Unique individuals expressing themselves through their art is what really transports an audience into the world of the performance. Students reach their highest potential when learning in a supportive space and given the tools they need to succeed.

“Choreographer Aisling Halpin designs a lively world that illustrates the ups and downs of gambling and keeps the tension building.” -Battle Creek Enquirer (Guys and Dolls at Tibbits Opera House)

“Halpin's clever choreography helps pep it up. Whether it's tap dancing on suitcases, rhythmically scrubbing floors, or creatively undressing behind set pieces, this cast is in sync and full of energy.” - Encore Michigan (Nymph Errant at Tibbits Opera House)
